We are not your typical guild format. Penumbral is a community with multiple factions, play styles and character goals. Some fight for similar causes while others oppose those causes. Out of character, we are a friendly, supportive, storytelling team. In-character, we are free to be whomever we wish to be and band together with other like minded characters; whether you choose to be a hero or villain, lawful or chaotic, Penumbral has a place for you!
We felt this format was the best solution to being allowed only one guild per account. As roleplayers, it is unusual for anyone to play only one character or one type of character at all times. We like our alts! In most games, a roleplay character can be placed in whichever guild most suits that character. However, since we cannot do that, we have created a place for you regardless of which type of character you wish to play.
WARNING: If you are not comfortable creating your own story content or events and prefer a guild that will tell you where to go, how to play, or when to be some place, THIS IS NOT THE GUILD FOR YOU!The goal is to be a creative team. The guild leaders are not here to write stories for you. The leadership is here for logistics and to give the supportive tools that you, the member need to bring your stories to life.
Note: All officers are available to you for brainstorming and will encourage you to integrate your own personal stories in the main storyline. Although we are not solely responsible for creating events and stories, we do create situations and stories for the newest of recruits to begin to build their own place within our ranks.
Events vs Chapters
Chapters are guild related plotlines that span a predetermined length of time. Ordinarily a week or more depending on the time it takes to reach the plot's goals. Each chapter contains multiple, member-ran RP scenes/sessions and may contain a number of subplots. A collective guild Chapter Journal is posted in the forums (Roleplay >> Main Theme Story Journals) where players may summarize their character movements and summaries of their RP sessions for that chapter.
NOTE: Summaries can be written in a number of formats. They can be written in the form of a player journaling about their experience, a simple pasting of screenshots of the session text (log), or it maybe just a brief outline with bullet points. Which ever format you choose is not as important as making sure the entry is made in a timely manner (within 24 hours preferred) so that others know where to place their characters as the story progresses. This is also important because our guild history is pulled directly from these summaries. Should you choose to journal in a creative way, protions maybe showcased and immortalized in our official story.
Events are player organized activities that take place at a specific date and time. These maybe IC (in-character) or OOC (out-of-character) activities and all members are free to schedule and maintain their own events within the guild at any time. Please try not to schedule two events (chapters do NOT count as events) during the same date and time.
Events are scheduled on the Guild Calendar and should be scheduled using EST. The Guild Pocketwatch can be found on the Events page along with the calendar and is set to EST to help those in other time zones.
Read the RULES!
The general behaviors we expect all recruits and members to follow is to respect and honor your fellow guildmates. In addition, we expect loyalty, integrity, humility and kindness. This is all ooc only. You can be a total douchebag in character if you wish.
For further clarification on the expectations as far as rules go, please see the rules page on our site.

Getting into the roleplay
How to Start roleplaying in Penumbral
Plan a character - What kind of character do you want to play? What role in the world do you see for yourself?
Read the website - Familiarise yourself with the guild set up as a whole
Identify where you want your character to fit within the whole of the guild. We have several places for characters to fit, though there is freedom to move around within RP as the story progresses. (Elegy, Azhar Merchant League, Diobarach, Villain)
Pick a hook - What is the best way to bring your character into the group?
Ask for RP - speak up in game or in discord! The sooner you say something, the sooner you get brought in ICly. Don't be shy!
Note: Roleplay officers are available to help you. Check the left side panel for current officers.
Hooks for Getting Involved the Guild ICly.
Bounty hunting current members of the Elegy/Diobarach - there is an ongoing bounty, see here for the official bounty posting.
Get hired by the Azhar Merchant League- needs merchants, caravan guards/mercs, wagon drivers, people to sell/buy wares, Administrators in each town, ship captains/smugglers, etc.
Commonfolk - we need support staff, like tavern-keepers, blacksmiths, herbalists, street rats, etc.
Opposition to the Elegy/Diobarach- Do not feel like your character must support the doings of the Elegy, we enjoy having characters that oppose them also.
Seeking knowledge - The Elegy members have a vast amount of knowledge at their disposal, particularly in the black energy and ancient times. Seek someone out to answer questions.
Seek to join the Elegy - The Elegy is the official body of magic users, based on the Aes Sedai’s White Tower in the Wheel of Time series. At this time, we do not have “Circles”, though that is something we aim for in the future. The Elegy also accepts non-magic users as support, including but not limited to messengers, bodyguards, spies, researchers etc.
